On first launch, the Welcome tab opens — follow the Get Started walkthrough or jump straight into connecting to TIA Portal. You can reopen the Welcome tab anytime from Help → Welcome Guide, or turn off auto-open with the checkbox at the bottom of the page.
Tip: Press Ctrl+Shift+P anywhere in the application to open the Command Palette and type a command by name (for example Connect). Press Ctrl+P for Quick Open to jump to a file, and Ctrl+, to open Settings.
1. Connect to TIA Portal Project
Open the TIA Portal view from the Activity Bar (the icon strip on the far left), then run Connect — from the view's title-bar button or via the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P → Connect). There are two ways to connect:
Option A: Open Project File
- Run Connect and choose to open a project file
- Select your
.ap15/.ap16/.ap17/.ap18/.ap19/.ap20/.ap21project file - The connection starts automatically and the project tree appears in the Side Bar
Option B: Attach to Running TIA Portal
- Open your project in TIA Portal
- Run Attach (from the TIA Portal view or the Command Palette)
- Pick the running instance from the list and confirm; the project tree appears in the Side Bar
Tip: Attaching is faster since the project doesn't need to be reloaded.
Tip: No project yet? Click New TIA Project… in the Welcome tab to scaffold a project — pick the TIA Portal version inside the wizard, no prior connection required. See New Project Wizard.
2. Set Export Directory
Choose the folder where exported XML files are written, either with Browse Export Folder… on the Welcome tab or in Settings (Ctrl+,) under the export-folder options.
Tip: Use a Git repository folder for automatic version control.
First Export Operation
Export All Blocks
- In the TIA Portal view's Project Explorer (Side Bar), expand the PLC and navigate to Blocks
- Right-click the PLC or the Blocks folder and choose Export All
- Blocks are exported as XML files to the chosen export folder
Export Selected Blocks
- Tick the per-row checkboxes next to the blocks you want to export
- Run Export Selected from the right-click menu
First Import Operation
Import Blocks from XML
- Open the Export Folder view to see the XML files in your export folder
